As Phillips was sending the message above, what looked like someone from the engine crew started to unfasten Phillips’ lifebelt while Bride was gathering his spare money in the sleeping quarters.  Phillips was so engrossed in his transmissions that he did not notice the man.  The sound of water began to come from the hallway, which was beginning to flood.  It slightly shocks Bride, and he turns around to see the man stealing his lifejacket.  A brief fight happens between them and the man, who is then knocked out cold by Bride, lying on the floor.

John Phillips tries to stay longer, but Harold Bride is able to pull him off of the set.  It knocks over the morse key, which is left dangling from the desk.  Phillips finally decided to leave, and yelled, “Come, let's clear out!”

As they leave the officers quarters, Bride and Phillips see that Collapsible B is still not pushed off of the roof.  They climb to the roof using the separation gates and the bench beside the door.

When they went up top to the roof by the first funnel, Phillips ran aft, his whereabouts afterward remaining under heavy scrutiny.  It is said that he later joined Collapsible B and died from hypothermia.  Harold Bride later recalled that he saw Captain Smith jumping from the bridge as Bride grabbed ahold of an oarlock.  Bride is then tossed from the boat into the water, as he was clinging onto the oarlock.  He is then swept under the boat due to the largely flooded area.  He is freed when the ship returns to an even keel and begins to plunge.  Bride watches in horror as the ship goes down, and then swims over to the same boat that he got swept under.

Approximation on when they left based on Bride’s Marconi Report, US/UK Inquiries, and flooding analysis:
